On-site Support Resources
The Hawthorne Cancer Resource CenterThis center was named after and funded by Barbara and Bill Hawthorne, a Richmond couple who lost their battle with cancer. The Hawthorne provides a single location in the Richmond area for all cancer patients, their families and friends to gather for social and emotional support as well as to receive extensive cancer education and resource materials, all free of charge. The center is located at 1459 Johnston-Willis Drive on the Johnston Wills Campus. The Survivors Reflection GardenThe Survivors Reflection Garden at Johnston-Willis is a place to celebrate life and remember those who have lost their battle with cancer.
Located in a quiet spot lined by cypress trees and filled with flowering plants and other foliage, the garden's centerpiece is a brick-lined, tree-shaded herb garden that contains a variety of medicinal herbs that have influenced modern medicine and cancer treatment. The bricks surrounding the herb garden were once a part of the elementary school in Old Towne Petersburg, Virginia, named after the famous general, Stonewall Jackson. They were donated by cancer survivor Elbert L. Pugh Sr. A place of solitude, the garden is a sanctuary for patients and their families. Throughout the year, various events are hosted in the garden. Buy a Piece of the Garden in Memory of a Loved one so it Continues to GrowTo order a brick for the Survivors Reflection Garden, call us. This is to fund a walkway through the garden. Each brick will be engraved with the name of a cancer survivor or in memory of someone who has lost their life to cancer. The cost is $30 per brick.
